BOOK TOUR: Giveaway and Review of LINEAGE by C. Vonzale Lewis

Hello Bookish Friends!

I am so pleased to share my Takeover Tour stop for LINEAGE by C. Vonzale Lewis today! Thank you to Parliament House Press for including me on this tour, and for publishing this great novel!

Synopsis:

Smart-mouthed Nicole Fontane has a way of getting herself into trouble. She’s been fired from every job she’s had but still refuses to work in her father’s apothecary shop because of his practice of Earth Magick. On Tulare Island where Nicole grew up, Magick has always been a way of life—one she’s determined to avoid at all costs.

With less than two hundred dollars in the bank and rent due, Nicole is forced to take a job at Tribec Insurance as a last resort. Little does she realize, the moment she sets foot inside the building, she becomes a pawn. A sinister force has set its sights on her and will stop at nothing to use her in a sadistic game.

Tribec’s proprietors, the Stewart family, are curiously preoccupied with the Naqada, the mysterious pre-dynastic Egyptian society. Nicole finds it creepy, but on the bright side, the job reconnects her with her estranged friend, Marta. Yet the eerie atmosphere, disappearing Magick wards, and the smell of blood inside Tribec bring Nicole to a startling conclusion—the Stewarts are practicing Blood Magick, the deadliest of the Five Principles. By the time Nicole uncovers the truth, Marta and her four children have gone missing, and all signs implicate the Stewarts and an archaic blood ritual to an Old One, a Naqada god imprisoned on Tulare Island.

Battling the evil of Blood Magick will demand Nicole to confront a hidden past and unlock the Magick buried within. But can she set aside her deep-rooted fears to work with a team of vigilante Mages? Or will the clock run out on Marta and her children—and on Nicole?

Review:

So, to the review!

Lineage is a fast-paced novel full of fascinating myth making. I imagine this book won’t be for everyone, Nicole can be a difficult character to engage with, but it certainly has a very definite aesthetic and powerful world building that will appeal to a lot of people! Just fair warning – there are explicit (but well written!) sex scenes!

It took some time for me to get into the story, due in large part the aforementioned difficult main character, but once the mystery/thriller aspects of the story started taking hold, I was suddenly super engaged! C. Vonzale Lewis really knows how to blend fantasy, mythology, and mystery in an exciting way! There were a lot of layers and nuance to the magic and myth of Lineage, something that fans of fantasy can really sink their teeth into. The world felt full and real, with true depth that only comes from a thorough investigation of the mythos surrounding it. I loved addition of Egyptian and Creole elements as integral to the story, it felt new and unique.

Lewis has also generated a really exciting web of secondary characters. They all feel important and human (or inhuman). There was a real sense that these people lived in the world and had lives outside of what the main character was seeing when she interacted with them. I never got that feeling that they were sort of standing there waiting for Nicole and the story to show up.

This brings me to Nicole. I really wanted to like her. I love sass and sex positive characters, but something about her just never settled with me during the first half of the novel. This lack of connection made me resistant to her throughout the whole story. I was almost always more interested in the mystery that she was involved in or the dips and drops of the magick that we were learning as she was. I felt colored by that early dislike for her the whole way through. I think it may have been a case of me going in expecting a sassy, smart-mouthed HERO and getting a sassy, smart-mouthed ANTI-HERO. Nicole has had a tough life, and her way to survive it has been to become hard and harsh and not really grow up. I appreciate this about her and I am actually glad that this character exists. I think women in literature should be allowed to have these story arcs. My issues are purely my own, my personal tastes tend to run a little less rough. More Veronica Mars, less Jessica Jones.

I am really grateful to Parliament House Press and C. Vonzale Lewis for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I decided to rate Lineage 3.5/5 stars. It took me a while to get into, and I found Nicole a bit much for my taste, but this is a really solidly built and fascinating world with a really engaging mystery!
